The Grammy-winning performer received an honorary doctorate in fine arts from New York University. The superstar received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from New York University on Wednesday, blowing kisses as the crowd roared as she walked to the stage at a packed Yankee Stadium.

Swift, sporting her signature red lipstick and new award-winning dress, joked to the thousands of graduates, “I’m 90 percent sure the main reason I’m here is that I have a number called 22.”

“I never had a normal college experience per se. I went to public high school until the 10th grade and then completed my education doing homeschool work on the floor of airport terminals,” Swift said in her opening address.

The singer-songwriter, producer, and director said she started her music career at 15, touring various radio stations nationwide.

She has sold over 100 million albums and won album of the year at the 2021 Grammys for her album folklore, making her the first woman to win the category three times. Her previous wins were in 2010 for Fearless and 2016 for 1989.

She winked at the audience when Jason King of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music talked about her recently re-recorded albums, including Fearless.

Swift shared advice with the class of 2022 but warned, “I don’t feel qualified in any way to tell you what to do.”

“You’ve worked, struggled, sacrificed, studied, and dreamed to get here today. I won’t tell you what to do because nobody likes that, but I’ll give you life hacks for when I started my dreams as a career”, she said.

“Never be ashamed to try. Effortlessness is a myth.”

Swift concluded her speech by telling graduates that making mistakes is inevitable, but “when difficult things happen to us, we will recover, we will learn from them, we will become more resilient.”

“As long as we’re lucky enough to breathe, we’ll inhale, inhale, take a deep breath, and exhale. I’m a doctor now, so I know how breathing works,” she said.

“I hope you know how proud I am to share this day with you.

“We’re doing this together, so let’s just keep dancing like we’re the class of 22.”
